Gianluca Sansone, Mauro Icardi and Marcelo Estigarribia sealed Delio Rossi’s side victory with a
lone Erik Lamela goal all the away side offered.
The Giallorossi started the game in an energetic manner and created a number of early chances with perhaps the best falling to Michael Bradley.
The American surged towards the Sampdoria area and seemingly unopposed, shot on goal. However, he could only slice his effort wide as he failed to test Sergio Romero.
Consequently, the Argentine goalkeeper would have plenty of opportunity to display his talent making smart saves, firstly from Erik Lamela and then again to push a well struck Francesco Totti free kick wide.
For all the chances Roma had carved out in the first half they could not break down a strong Sampdoria and the scores were level going into the break.
Aurelio Andreazzoli’s men started again brightly in the second half and believed they had taken the lead through Lamela. However, the goal was disallowed by the linesman after he adjudged Marquinho to be offside in the build up.
For all the visitors pressure it was to be the away side who took the lead. Gianluca Sansone played in Marcelo Estigarribia who neatly controlled the ball in his stride and sent a low driven effort across Maarten Stekelenburg to the delight of the home support.
It looked as if Roma had been handed a lifeline when Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was brought down from behind inside the area and the away side were awarded a penalty. Osvaldo stepped up to take the spot kick but saw his dreadful effort saved comfortably.
Things got worse for Roma moments later when Sansone doubled the Blucerchiati’s lead from a free kick. The Italian drove his effort over the wall and across goal in the top left hand corner.
Minutes later Roma offered themselves some hope with Erik Lamela putting the ball home from close range to half the deficit and offer the travelling fans some light relief.
This flicker of hope was all but extinguished when Mauro Icardi rose above the Roma defence to head home a Sansone delivery and stretched the home side’s advantage further.
