A first half double from Livaja wasn’t enough for Atalanta to take any points, with Marquinho
and Pjanic netting for the visitors, before a late winner from Vasilis Torosidis. Despite poor conditions and with snow falling even at the time of kickoff, the match started – and did so with a bang.
Former Inter striker Marko Livaja had an easy finish at the back post after a mistake by Roma defender Marquinhos, inside the opening ten minutes.
Marquinho equalised within five minutes with an excellent strike which curled beyond Consigli and inside the far post.
Roma were the the more threatening of the two sides, and Miralem Pjanic and Pablo Osvaldo both had chances, before the former eventually scored after a great clipped free-kick – with Consigli possibly unsighted by the increasingly bad conditions.
Atalanta equalised on the stroke of half time with a smart finish from Livaja, after he broke the offside trap before smashing beyond Stekelenburg.
Despite increasing fears the players wouldn’t appear for the second half, the game did continue.
It was a scrappy half, and it took until inside the final 20 minutes before the winning goal came, as Vasilis Torosidis headed in a perfect aerial pass by Michael Bradley.
Erik Lamela should have killed the game with a one-on-one in the dying moments, though the shot was saved by Consigli.
Fortunately, his error wasn’t punished, and Roma ran out 3-2 winners.
