According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Spurs have already enquired with Roma about a potential summer move for the Argentinean, who has hit 11 goals in 22 Serie A outings this season.
But the north London club, who have only Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor as their senior striking options, will have to compete with Juventus and an unnamed Russian club - thought to Anzhi Makhachkala - for his services.
The 27-year-old has over three years left on his contract but it has been reported
that Roma have made the decision to sell him this summer, after he fell out with club legend Francesco Totti.
But Spurs will not have a clear run at the striker, with interest from Russia and within Italy.
