Roma Set Sights On Jovetic

Stevan Jovetic
According to some Italian media, Roma have earmarked Stevan Jovetic as one of their main transfer targets this summer.

With Francesco Totti turning 37 in September, the Roma management are reportedly looking to bring in a player who could potentially be the captain's long-term replacement with the Giallorossi, and Jovetic would seem to fit the bill.

La Repubblica report that not only have Roma targeted the Montenegrin international, but sporting director Walter Sabatini has already initiated talks with one of the player's representatives, Sergio Berti. Berti already has ties with the club, as he represented Daniele De
Rossi when the midfielder renewed his contract last year.

The 23-year-old's wages would also be affordable, as he currently earns €2.2m a season at Fiorentina, but there are a number of difficulties with any potential transfer. There is significant other interest in Jovetic, primarily from the Premier League as Arsenal and Manchester City continue to monitor the situation, while Juventus are also said to be interested.

Jovetic has already turned down a move to Manchester City, telling Gazzetta dello Sport last autumn that "I stopped those negotiations, as by the time they had made their move I had already decided I would be staying in Florence". However, there is certainly no guarantee that he would make the same decision again, should Roberto Mancini's team come calling again in the summer.

The transfer fee required to tear Jovetic from Florence will also be higher than Roma can realistically afford; although Andrea Della Valle has denied the existence of a release clause in Jovetic's contract, his agent Fali Ramadani has claimed that there is a buy-out clause to the value of €30m.

In order to make the move more affordable, Il Tempo and Leggo report that Roma will insert Pablo Osvaldo into the transfer as a makeweight. The Viola have been linked with bringing Osvaldo back to the club for some time, and unless Osvaldo rediscovers his form it has been claimed that Roma will be willing to sell him in the summer.

However, with a reported value of anywhere between €10m and €15m, Osvaldo's inclusion in the deal would not even halve the necessary transfer fee. Potential revenue from qualifying for the Champions League would be a major boost to Roma's chances of both being able to afford and being able to attract the Montenegrin, but the Giallorossi are still outsiders in the race for third.
